2015, European Industrial and Technical Heritage Year
Putting the spots on the roots of today’s technology and industry
2015 European Industrial and Technical Heritage Year is presented in Brussels on March 6th, supported by European Commission and Council of Europe. It aims to widen access and foster care for industrial heritage.
Tesouros de Galicia joins this initiative enthusiastically due to its original focus: as it arise from the grassroots and is growing bottom-up, in contrast with most other European campaigns that are initiated top-down. Thus it is an exemplary example of citizens’ initiative and the power of associations. It will show how public institutions from member states of EU do respond to and encourage, how they appreciate and support volunteers and voluntary associations.
Tesouros de Galicia advised 5th European Conference on Industrial Tourism and is currently developing a Project regarding sustainable promotion of industrial heritage based on Cultural Tourism. The Project is co-financed by provincial Government (Diputacion Provincial da Coruña).
The Project is based not only in archeological industrial heritage, but in those related to living industry, as they show manufacturing process. Industrial heritage resources allow knowing associated heritage (cultura, nature, gastronomy…) as sustainable tourism development is clearly an opportunity for rural economies.
This Project takes place in the 250 anniversary of “Gran Tinglado de la Maestranza” an outstanding industrial building located in the port of Ferrol. This building was the largest industrial one. Mr. Sánchez Bort was the architect. This building is currently in use.
