The Casino of Ferrol: an artistic building
In the Royal Avenue of Ferrol the casino is built, it’s a singular modernist peace of art built in 1925, of the architect Roberto Ucha. In its interior peaking out under the conversation hall, there is a large space windowed facing the street.
The scaling and walls of this hall with expressive and symbolic modernist paintings, unique in their kind in the Gallegan community, the artist was Felipe Bello Piñeiro, local artist that dedicated his art mainly to scenery painting. This decorative work was finished in 1936.
The artwork makes a singular decorative clash within the modernist spirit present after the 20s, in work that brings oriental influences and a pantheistic work of the author that makes a tribute to the Galician landscape and the space’s of plants that are more representative.
As a result of its work, the halls scaling was covered with an impressive vegetable decoration, with a predomination of green colors, ochre and golden and alternating coffers decorated with entwined Celtic influence with other drawings and paintings of the emblematic flower f toxo of the Galician hills. The central coffer is decorated with a harmonious combination of carballo and chestnut leaves, two species native from Galicia.
Different panels are alternated on the walls with scenes of landscapes and plants of a wide range of colors. And behind a peaceful green background, perfectly in harmony with the golden leafs of the carballo and chestnut and of course the yellow flowers of the toxo, the presence of the emblematic Galician pine is also added, booth its needles and its fruits.
The panels express various landscapes of the marine Ribera of the ria of Ferrol and of the surroundings of the San Andrés church of Teixido, traditional place of pilgrimage and also a touring area for the return of the Camino de Santiago.
