San Felipe Castle
In Galicia you can find a large number of examples belonging to military architecture, booth in land and out right near the coast line. These are the case of the castle of San Felipe, built to defend the strategic ria of Ferrol in the XVI century by initiative of Felipe II. Created an unparalleled defensive set supported by the installation of two bastions in the opposite bank, the castles of Nuestra Señora of laPalma and of San Martín, organized in an insurmountable defensive triangle at the time . to enhance the defending of the ria, they joined a huge chain between the San Felipe castle and the San Martín castle, these way, the enemy boats failed if they tried to sail into those waters.
The building that is still conserved today is the result of some re-modulations made during the XVIII century for a modernization of the construction, in the same way that it happened to the castle of la Palma.
In the year 1800, part of the battle of Brión, one of the most famous that took place at these ría, with these castles as main sites of battle, thanks to their joined power with the cannons installed in the ría, were able to defeat more that 100 ships and 15.000 English men. Every year a reenactment takes place that doesn’t allow us to forget that battle.
Its declared as a sight of cultural interest (BIC) since 1994 and you can visit it to rely understand how hard the entrance to these ría could relly be for the enemy.
