The district of Magdalena, like a chocolate bar
In times of Carlos III, was proposed in Ferrol one of the most interesting urban proposals at the time in Europa. The Xunta of Galicia declared it a Historic-Artistic area in 1983.
During the XVIII century the city of Ferrol was suffering a great increase in population that was greatly noticeable because of the military arsenal and the Royal shipyard, in consequence the fishermen district of Ferrol Vello and the builders district of Esteiro couldn’t sustain these increased population any longer. Because of these, Carlos III approved the planning of a new district designed by military architects that had also served for the creation of blue prints of arsenals and shipyards.
These way a completely rationalist neighborhood was created, typical of the enlightenment, characterized by a gridded layout de off it streets, creating some sort of chocolate bar like designed capped on the corners by wide squares: the Arms square and the Marqués del Amboage square. The typical housing of these neighborhood have 2 or 3 squares with roofs that where decorated with great and other features in wood that remind us to the front of a great ship.
During the XX century several modernist houses are erected in these neighborhood, introducing forged iron in its galleries, these mixture of styles will create a unique style and very scenic.
The district of Magdalena offers a nice walk to the visitor because most of its streets are pedestrianized. It’s the centric shop zone of the whole city and where you can have a nice rest in its impressive squares.
