Betanzos was funded by Brigo, great-grandson of Noé, on the hill of San Martin of Tiobre, preserves where the place was names Betanzos Viejos. During the roman domination period, its habitants would receive the right of citizenship by Flabio Vespasiano, so it will be known as Brigantium Flavium, present in the itinerary of Antonino en la Vía per loca maritima, and its position in the vertices Magnus Portus Artabrorum. They would continue the Swabia’s, the Visigoths and with a minor incidence the Muslims, that wouldn’t be able to dominate it.
in 1212 the neighbors will ask the King Alfonso IX the population exchange to Castro of Untia to which the king will accept, proceeding these way to the construction of the village and protection walls. As population of realango, will be worthy of many privileges granted by the monarchs.
Most linages of the kingdom would rise palaces in the city, at the time of establishing foundations and erect artistic graves in their monasteries and churches, that culminate the Galician Gothic.
In 1465, King Enrique IV would elevate to the category of the villa to a city, and granted it a yearly fair of free trade. In the 16th century it would share with A Coruña the provincial capital, and will become one of the seven provinces that formed the Kingdom of Galicia.
In the reign of Felipe V, it was created in 1734 the Provincial Regiment of Betanzos, abolished in the military reform carried out in 1841, as it would be your province in the territorial reorganization of 1834.
During the independence war in 1809, Betanzos would be the only Galician capital not ceremoniously receives the French invader.
In 1918 King Alfonso XIII granted its town hall treatment of excellence, boasting the city, the oldest in Galicia, the title of “Very Noble, always loyal, Royal and ancient city of Betanzos of the Knights”, and declared a historic-artistic heritage on December 31, 1970.
