Archaeology Route of West Lugo
If you love Prehistory and Archaeologic in general, you must do this route.
In the west of Lugo´s province is the town of Guitiriz, famous for its spa, but in this place there are other thing that you can visit. Quenllas do Forno is an example, this is a castro, a town of Celtic culture. In addition, a few kilometres away, in Vilalba, there is a Museum of Prehistory and Archaeology, where you learn by walking on all remnants of chronological stages of Prehistory to the arrival of the Romans to the peninsular north.
So, in Guitiriz, visit the Castro Quenllas do Forno, one of the most famous forts of this municipality.
Regular size, located in an elevated position and easily accessible, whose entrance is a “horreo” completely covered with grass. The Acropolis is popularly known as “the square of the Mouros”. It has large and deep moats and three walls bordering the fort are preserved. It is covered with oaks and overlooks the small village of O Forno.
The next stop will be in Vilalba, in the Museum of Prehistory and Archaeology. The exhibition is arranged chronologically, starting from the oldest to the most recent. In each block there is a panel with a single scheme introduction to warn, visually, the basic differences between the various periods. The exhibition concludes with a synthesis, where a summary of the contents is offered. The permanent exhibition is supplemented by temporary exhibitions and a panel of quarterly issues that changes periodically.
