Route of the Mountain Castros
If you love mountains and archaeology this is your route. Here many forts all located in a wonderful and natural sceneries of Os Ancares and O Courel, in the eastern part of the province of Lugo. Samos, Folgoso do Courel and Cervantes are the municipalities where these Celtics settlements are located, some of them related to a farm of gold that was in the area.
The first visit will be to Samos, the Castro of Formigueiros located more than 800 meters high. It is considered one of the most monumental in Galicia. Iron Age seems to have been inhabited until the time of the Germanic invasions and the collapse of the Roman Empire. One of its peculiarities is to have at least four major defensive walls with their moats and parapets added at different points.
We will continue to Folgoso do Courel, where Castros of A Torre and Vilar are. Both forts were built in Roman times when in the area large gold deposits were exploited. They are on top of large rocky spurs Lor river valley.
Finally, Santa Maria do Castro, in Cervantes. In the Sierra of Ancares, this fort is perched on Quindós river valley, on a promontory that shares with a late medieval cemetery and the small parish church.
