Route of the Castros of Baixo Miño
This tour is a short route that includes a visit to two forts in the southern province of Pontevedra.
They belong to two municipalities bordering the neighboring country: Tui and A Guarda. One is the Castro of Santa Tegra, which is one of the most impressive and famous castros in Galicia given the large size of land excavated and because it is something rebuilt which makes the visitor can easily understand it.
First we go to Tui, because there is where is located the Castro of Alto dos Cubos, located inside the Monte Aloia and within the Natural Park. It is also referred to as head Francs due to a Gallic settlement in the vicinity belonging to Napoleon Bonaparte. It rises 270 meters above sea level at its summit an Iron Age settlement that was structured on two levels. This is a pre-Roman castro of the second century which was active until after the Romanization.
Then, the tour takes us to the Castro of Santa Tegra in A Guarda, one of the jewels of the Celtic culture in Galicia. It is a Galician-Roman settlement whose excavations began in 1913. Urbanistically appear in this space squares and narrow streets that separate the groups of buildings could be called neighbourhoods. The settlement is dated to the first century BC, when the Emperor Augustus, abandoning at the end of the Julio-Claudian period, ending in 68 AD, therefore, this is a castro from Roman times.
